First year Project

High Street 2012 is a program of public realm improvements along the street from Aldgate to Stratford. The project aims to upgrade the street from Whitechapel Road to Stratford High Street, and to provide a lasting legacy from the 2012 Games for local communities. As London met first year architecture students we have been playing both an interesting and exciting role in the project. The combination of 100 students researching and designing for spesific sites along the street has resulted in great in-depth and unique knowledge of the street that has not been gathered before.

MAKE Architects

MAKE Architects was set up in 2004 by Ken Shuttleworth with the aim, in part, of creating an organisation that was devoid of hierarchy. This would cover both their design operations, and their business models. Of the former, MAKE's approach to design gives equal voice and participation to the entire work force; whether created by a new or experienced partner, a design idea will be judged on its merit alone. The negation of titles (note that it is called MAKE architects rather than Ken Shuttleworth Architects) amongst the partners enhances this egalitarian approach. The lack of hierarchy is reflected in the fact that MAKE is 100% employee owned organization.

We are particularly interested in MAKE's tangible practice strategies. MAKE sets as an agenda: 'An appreciation of place is essential to our working process; we never resort to a fixed architectural language, but work in response to the particularities of a site and consider the use of local materials where relevant so that our schemes are rooted in their context'.
